Privacy Policy
Effective date: 24 June 2026 · Last updated: 24 June 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how LINEA
(“LINEA,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, stores, shares,
and protects your information when you use the LINEA mobile apps for iPhone and Android and our
related website and services (together, the “Service”). LINEA helps you turn the photos you
already have into family memories through gentle, AI-guided interviews, and to share those memories
with people you choose.
We have written this policy to be honest and specific about what actually happens in the app. If you
have any questions, contact us at privacy@lineastories.com.
1. Who we are
LINEA is the data controller responsible for your personal information under this policy. You can
reach us about any privacy matter — including to exercise your rights — at
privacy@lineastories.com.
2. Information we collect
We collect only what we need to provide the Service. The categories below reflect what the app actually sends to and stores on our servers.
Account & profile information
- Email address and display name.
- If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive a unique identifier from that provider, your email and name as provided, and an authentication token. (We never receive your Apple or Google password.)
- An optional profile photo URL and your language/locale preference.
- If you register with an email and password, we store your password only in a securely hashed form — never in plain text.
Your memories and content
- Photos you select for a memory. Before a photo leaves your phone it is downscaled and re-encoded, which removes the embedded EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates — the original location data is not uploaded with the image.
- Audio recordings of the answers you speak during an interview.
- Interview conversations (the questions and your written or transcribed answers), and the resulting memory content — titles, narratives, quotes, fun facts, approximate dates, and place names.
- People and places you mention or confirm — names, relationships, and notes you add (your private knowledge graph), including whether a person is marked as deceased so we can handle those memories with care.
- Social content — comments, likes, collaborators you invite, and memories shared with you.
Videos stay on your device. If a memory references a video, only a local reference and its
duration are recorded on our servers — the video file itself is not uploaded.
Diagnostic & technical information
- When the app encounters an error (in published builds), it sends us a diagnostic report to help us fix it: the error details, the screen or request involved, the app version, your operating-system version, and your device model and manufacturer. These reports are sent to our own monitoring system, not to an advertising network.
- When you use our website, our servers record standard log data such as your IP address and browser/user-agent. Our internal audit log also records the IP address and user-agent associated with significant actions on your account, which we keep for security and to evidence that requested deletions were carried out.
What we do not collect
- We do not use any third-party advertising, tracking, or analytics SDKs, and we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
- We do not collect your contacts, your live device location, or precise GPS coordinates.
- We do not currently collect or process payment information.
3. What stays on your device
A lot of LINEA’s intelligence runs entirely on your phone, and the data below never leaves your
device:
- Reading and grouping your photo library to suggest memories, including the photos’ original dates and (on supported devices) their location metadata, which is used only on-device and is never uploaded.
- On-device photo analysis to help suggest which photos to include. This is used only to rank suggestions; it does not identify or recognise who is in a photo, and no face data is uploaded.
- On iPhone, when you dictate edits, speech-to-text runs on-device and that audio is not sent to us or to Apple.
- Anonymous, on-device counters that help the app decide what to suggest next. They contain no identifiers and are never uploaded.
4. How we use information
- To provide the core Service: conduct interviews, create and store your memories, and let you revisit and organise them.
- To transcribe your interview audio into text.
- To let you share memories and collaborate with people you invite.
- To keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, debug problems, and improve reliability.
- To send you service-related communications (such as a link to your exported data).
- To comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your memories, photos, or voice to serve advertising.
5. AI processing
LINEA uses artificial intelligence to guide interviews and to turn your answers into a written memory.
To do this, some of your content is processed by trusted AI providers acting as our service providers
(“sub-processors”) under contracts that require them to protect your data and to process it only on
our instructions — not for their own purposes:
- Our AI provider processes your interview text and the photos attached to a memory so the AI can ask relevant questions and write the memory.
- Our transcription provider processes your interview audio recordings to transcribe them into text.
The AI assists you; it does not make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about
you. You can choose what to photograph, say, and save.
6. Who we share data with
We do not sell your data and we share it only with the service providers that make the Service work.
Each is bound by contract to safeguard your data and to use it only to provide their service to us, with
the same or equal protection of your data as described in this policy.
| Provider | What they receive | Why |
| AI provider | Interview text and memory photos | AI interviews & memory generation |
| Transcription provider | Interview audio recordings | Speech-to-text transcription |
| Cloud storage provider | Your photos and audio files | Secure file storage |
| Backup storage provider | Backup copies of saved audio | Storage redundancy / backup |
| Apple & Google | Sign-in identifier & token | “Sign in with Apple/Google” authentication |
| Error-monitoring provider | Diagnostic & error logs | Reliability & error monitoring |
| Email delivery provider | Your email address | Service emails (e.g. data-export link) |
We may also disclose information if required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights,
safety, and security of our users and the Service. If LINEA is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale
of assets, we will notify you before your personal information becomes subject to a different privacy
policy.
7. Device permissions
The app asks for a permission only when it needs it, and explains why at the moment it asks:
- Photos — to read the photos you choose to turn into memories.
- Microphone — to record your spoken answers during interviews.
- Speech recognition (iPhone) — for on-device dictation; that audio stays on your device.
- Notifications — to send gentle, local reminders to capture a memory. These are optional.
- Photo location (Android) — to read a photo’s embedded location on-device only, to recognise trips and places; it is not uploaded.
The app does not request access to your live location, camera, or contacts. You can change any permission at any time in your device settings.
8. Legal bases for processing (EEA/UK)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on these legal bases under the GDPR:
- Performance of a contract — to provide the Service you sign up for (account, interviews, memories, sharing).
- Consent — for access to your photos, microphone, and notifications, and for the AI processing of your photos and voice. You may withdraw consent at any time (for example by revoking a permission or deleting your account); withdrawal does not affect processing already carried out.
- Legitimate interests — to keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, and diagnose and fix problems, balanced against your rights.
- Legal obligation — where we must process data to comply with the law.
9. Data retention & deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service.
Audio recordings you have saved are treated as durable and are kept until you delete the relevant memory
or your account.
Deleting your account (in-app)
You can permanently delete your account at any time from within the app (Settings → delete
account). When you do:
- We immediately sign you out and revoke your access tokens.
- We then erase your memories, quotes, photos and audio files (including the underlying stored files), interview sessions and conversations, your knowledge graph (people and places), collections, notification preferences, connected sign-in accounts, and your AI conversation history.
- For legal and security reasons we retain a minimal record that the account existed and was deleted, and our audit log, so we can evidence that the erasure was performed. These records do not contain your memories, photos, or audio.
Exporting your data
You can request a copy of your data from within the app. We prepare a downloadable archive of your
memories, interviews, knowledge graph, and your saved audio recordings, and email you a secure,
time-limited link to download it.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have some or all of the following rights over your personal information:
- Access — get a copy of the data we hold about you (see export, above).
- Rectification — correct inaccurate data.
- Erasure — delete your data (see account deletion, above).
- Restriction and objection — limit or object to certain processing.
- Portability — receive your data in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent — at any time, without affecting prior processing.
To exercise any right, email privacy@lineastories.com. We will
respond within the timeframe required by applicable law. If you are in the EEA or UK, you also have the
right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection supervisory authority.
11. California privacy rights
If you are a California resident, the CCPA/CPRA gives you the right to know what personal information we
collect and how it is used and shared, to access and delete it, to correct it, and to not be
discriminated against for exercising these rights. The categories of personal information we collect, our
purposes, and the parties we share it with are described in sections 2, 4, and 6 above.
We do not “sell” your personal information, and we do not “share” it for cross-context behavioural
advertising, as those terms are defined under California law. We therefore do not offer a “Do Not Sell or
Share” mechanism because there is nothing to opt out of. Your photos and voice recordings are treated as
sensitive personal information and are used only to provide the Service, not for any purpose that would
require a right to limit. To exercise your California rights, contact
privacy@lineastories.com.
12. Security
- All data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS/TLS.
- Photo and audio files are stored with our cloud storage providers and are protected by their storage-level encryption at rest. Files are transferred directly between your device and storage using short-lived, signed links; file contents do not pass through our application servers.
- Your authentication token is stored in your device’s secure storage, and connected sign-in tokens are encrypted in our database.
- No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and to limit access to it.
13. Children
LINEA is a general-audience service intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13
(or the higher minimum age required in your country). You must meet the minimum age to create an account.
We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13; if we learn that we
have, we will delete it.
Memories you create may include photos of, or references to, family members of any age, including
children. As the account holder, you are responsible for the content you choose to add and for having the
right to include the people who appear in it.
14. International data transfers
We and our service providers may process your information in countries other than where you live,
including the United States. Where we transfer personal information out of the EEA or UK, we rely on
appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses to protect it.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the
“Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Your continued use of the Service
after an update means you accept the revised policy.
If you have any questions, requests, or complaints about this policy or your data, contact us at:
